Downing Centre Local Court is a major heritage-listed former department store and now courthouse complex in the Sydney central business district. It features state government courts, including the Local Court, the District Court, and a law library known as the Downing Centre Library. The Downing Centre forms part of the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

What cases are heard in Downing Centre Local Court?

Local Courts hear a variety of criminal matters and drink driving and traffic matters. The following information applies to Downing Centre Local Court, as well as all other Local Courts in Australia.

Most matters will start at the Local Court. The Local Court primarily hears summary offences, which are less serious offences. Examples of such offences include disorderly behaviour and driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug. The Local Court will sometimes hear more serious offences, such as low-level assault, but this is rare. Most serious offences are heard at the District Court and higher Courts.

Other matters that are heard in Local Courts such as Downing Centre Local Court include:

• Appeals against decisions such as the Roads and Maritime Services’ decision to suspend a licence.

The Local Court also hears family law matters such as property settlements and residence orders.
