Camden is a historic town and suburb of Sydney located 65 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district. Camden was the administrative centre for the local government area of Camden Council until July/August 2016 and is a part of the Macarthur region.

Camden Local Court / Camden Court House

Camden Local Court, also known as Camden Court House, is an important part of the John Street Historic Precinct in central Camden. The present building was commenced in 1855 and completed in 1857 with cells underneath and at the rear. The building was designed during William Weaver’s term as Government Architect. A new lock-up was built to replace the old one between 1859-61.

What cases are heard in Camden Court House?

Local Courts hear a variety of criminal matters and drink driving and traffic matters. The following information applies to Camden Local Court, as well as all other Local Courts in Australia.

Most matters will start at the Local Court. The Local Court primarily hears summary offences, which are less serious offences. Examples of such offences include disorderly behaviour and driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug. The Local Court will sometimes hear more serious offences, such as low-level assault, but this is rare. Most serious offences are heard at the District Court and higher Courts.

Other matters that are heard in Local Courts such as Camden Court House include:

• Bail applications.
• Matters relating to Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs).
• Appeals against a previous Local Court decision.
• Appeals against decisions such as the Roads and Maritime Service’s decision to suspend a licence.

The Local Court deals with civil money and property matters that concern values up to $100,000. If the dispute is about a sum higher than this amount, the matter will go to the District Court or higher Courts.

The Local Court also hears family law matters such as property settlements and residence orders.
