What cases are heard in Braidwood Court House?

Local Courts hear a variety of criminal matters and drink driving and traffic matters.

Most matters will start at the Local Court. The Local Court primarily hears summary offences, which are less serious offences. Examples of such offences include disorderly behaviour and driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug. The Local Court will sometimes hear more serious offences, such as low-level assault, but this is rare. Most serious offences are heard at the District Court and higher Courts.

Other matters that are heard in Local Courts include:

  • Appeals against decisions such as the Roads and Maritime Service’s decision to suspend a licence.

The Local Court deals with civil money and property matters that concern values up to $100,000. If the dispute is about a sum higher than this amount, the matter will go to the District Court or higher Courts.
