Batemans Bay Local Court, also known as Batemans Bay Court House, was first opened in 1885 opposite the waterfront in Clyde Street, but the building was destroyed by a fire in 1903. The second and current Court House was opened in October 1905 in Orient Street, next to where the police station now stands.

What cases are heard in Batemans Bay Court House?

Local Courts hear a variety of criminal matters and drink driving and traffic matters. The following information applies to Batemans Bay Local Court, as well as all other Local Courts in Australia.

Most matters will start at the Local Court. The Local Court primarily hears summary offences, which are less serious offences. Examples of such offences include disorderly behaviour and driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug. The Local Court will sometimes hear more serious offences, such as low-level assault, but this is rare. Most serious offences are heard at the District Court and higher Courts.
