Balmain Local Court, also known as Balmain Court House, was built in 1888 and was designed by the Colonial Architect James Barnet.

What cases are heard in Balmain Local Court?

Local Courts hear a variety of criminal matters and drink driving and traffic matters. The following information applies to Balmain Local Court, as well as all other Local Courts in Australia.

Most matters will start at the Local Court. The Local Court primarily hears summary offences, which are less serious offences. Examples of such offences include disorderly behaviour and driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug. The Local Court will sometimes hear more serious offences, such as low-level assault, but this is rare. Most serious offences are heard at the District Court and higher Courts.
